Windows 7 laptop thinks second monitor present

Hello,

I have two monitors at my desk, both hooked up to a docking station. When my laptop is closed, I used those two monitors. I moved into a conference room and hooked up my laptop to a projector, and even if it's not hooked up, if I try and open a word document windows attempts to place it on the "2nd" monitor which is not currently hooked up. You can see it maximizing the window "off screen" and double clicking on it just minimizes it to the task bar. Right clicking on it doesn't provide any options for movement. I went to the advanced display settings and even if I set it to "mirror" the display it keeps trying to open the word document "off-screen". Any ideas?

Please help

I didn't find the right solution from the internet.
